📖 How to Memorise Bible Verses
Many people want to memorise Scripture but find that verses slip away after a few days. The problem is rarely memory itself — it's method. These steps work for children and adults alike, whether you're learning one favourite verse or a whole passage.
1. Understand it first
Read the verse in context — a few verses before and after — and make sure you know what it means. A verse you understand is far easier to remember than a string of words.
2. Learn the reference with it
Say the reference before and after the verse: "John 3:16 — For God so loved the world… — John 3:16." That ties the words to their place, so you can find them again and share them.
3. Break it into phrases
Learn one phrase at a time, saying it aloud until you can repeat it without looking, then add the next phrase. Natural breaks — commas and semicolons — make good stopping points.
4. Use the first-letter method
Write down only the first letter of each word. For John 3:16 that begins "F G s l t w, t h g h o b S…". Reading from the letters forces you to recall each word rather than just recognise it, and it's a handy prompt while you're still learning.
5. Write it out
Copying a verse by hand once or twice engages a different kind of memory from reading. Then try writing it from memory and check it word for word.
6. Review over days, not minutes
Repeat the verse several times on the day you learn it, then the next day, then a few days later, then weekly. Short reviews spread out over time fix a verse in long-term memory far better than repeating it fifty times in one sitting.
7. Practise in different ways
- Fill in a missing word — it checks that you know every word, not just the gist.
- Type the whole verse from its reference.
- Hear or read the verse and name the reference.
- Learn it with someone else and test each other.
Tip: Our Bible game practises all three — Fill the Blank, Type the Verse and Guess the Reference — using the King James Version, and the Bible Reading Streak helps you read a chapter a day.
